Obama’s words were welcomed by some gun-control advocates, but others quickly dismissed them as inadequate.
“The country needs him to send a bill to Congress to fix this problem — and take immediate executive action. Calling for ‘meaningful action’ is not enough. We have heard that rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership — not from the president and not from Congress. That must end today,” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
“When [Obama] talks about taking ‘meaningful action,’ obviously we have to find out what that means. I do believe he has the conviction to do something. I do believe he knows there has been too much pain in this country,” said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.). “I want to talk to the White House. I know that they can’t give me an answer tonight, but I want to know what they’re going to do. I need to know what they’re going to do.”
