Michael Felger has a few words for Tim Thomas over the Bruins' goalie's refusal to attend a White House ceremony honoring the Bruins for their Stanley Cup championship.
And those words aren't, "Way to go, big guy.""I think it's an embarrassment. I think Tim Thomas looks like a small-minded chump," Felger said on 'Uno's Sports Tonight' Monday, and that was just the beginning

small-minded chump. world class goalie. i hope this goes on and on forever, and it effects his play for the rest of the year. way to go, big guy!

Careful what you wish for. Tuukka is outplaying Thomas consistently of late.

i know. he is my fantasy goalie, but my team tanking would be a small price to pay. show some patriotism! we had a whitehouse tour in september. it was awesome. i was feeling really patriotic on that day. :)

Oh, you're a B's fan? Got WEEI or the SportsHub on?
Even the right-winger Scott-Brown pimps are less than enthused about Thomas. Trashing Obama, they like; having the international press all of sudden in a distracting frenzy around the team, not so much.

There is something to be said about "not meeting your hero's"...We watched the Stanley Cup playoffs, wore our Bruins shirts, hung our banner next to the tv. Tim Thomas is a fantastic Goalie, he contributed greatly to the Bruins success. He is a great Goalie and is embraced for that by many fans. He thinks Glen Beck is a hero of sorts...that is his right...stupid but his right.

What annoys me to no end is his claim that it's "not politics." What an @!$%#. Just declare it's politics and get on with life and sports ... and politics.

Of COURSE it's politics, what other reason could he have? He doesn't like Kenyans? (/sarc)

I wonder if he would have met Bush?
I'm sure he has met Dick a few times.

I'm willing to bet that FOX News covers this story way before they cover the fact that St. Louis is preparing for a welcoming home parade for our soldiers out of Iraq on this Saturday. Since they proclaim themselves - and are generally considered - THE OFFICIAL MEDIA REPRESENTATIVE of the Teapublikan Party, I guess that shows where their priorities REALLY lie. But since FOX News is dangerous to my intellectual health, I never watch anymore, so someone will have to correct me if I'm wrong.

Honestly, I have no idea why people are making such a big deal out of this. He disagrees with Obama's policies (and those of big government in general, it would seem), and chose not to be a part of a PR opportunity for the president. Why are the Stanley Cup winners even going to the White House? He is not the first athlete to elect to not attend an event at the White House, and certainly will not be the last...
- 5 votes
Because whether it's the Stanley Cup, World Series, Super Bowl or NBA Finals, the champions go to the White House to be celebrated. It's apolitical. Tim has every right to not attend, just as I have every right to be disappointed that he didn't attend.
His being a fan of Glenn Beck is another matter entirely.
Oh, Timmy, Timmy, Timmy...I thought better of you than that...

His being a fan of Glenn Beck is another matter entirely. - Obviously to many pucks to the head, I believe the medical term for the brain damage from repeated blows to the head is the "Beck Syndrome"

You got that right. And it can have a very poor ending for athletes who take this kind of grandstanding opportunity.

Maybe Tim thomas has taken to many wrist shots, backhanders, and slap shots to his face (though he wearing a mask) clouding his judgements and thought process.

So his comment about the problem being with the Administration, Legislatative and Judicial branches of the government and of both parties is political why???
- 1 vote
fstwarrior:
is political why???
Because that's what @!$%#ing politics is.
I hate that idiotic conceit, which, for some odd reason, seems to be limited to the independent hard right. No person on the reciprocal side of the spectrum (say, if Ralph Nader were invited to a state dinner or something and refused) would ever try to pretend the action was not political.
What Thomas means is "It's not necessarily 'partisan'" (although even if he'd said that he'd still be a lying scumbag, but at least he'd have used the correct terms. So he'd be a smart lying scumbag instead of a stupid lying scumbag).

"A statement by the 37-year-old Thomas posted Monday on the team website said he opposed the "out of control" growth of the federal government that threatened "the rights, liberties, and property of the people."
"This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the federal government," the statement said. "Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL."
Don't see any "between the lines" politics here - 'specially when he says "This was not about politics or party" - yet you dub him a "lying scumbag" - because he's not talking your talk - sad, really sad.
- 5 votes
fstwarrior:
Don't see any "between the lines" politics here
Correct. There's no "between the lines politics" there. It's straight-out straight-up explicit right-wing political ideology.
1. I love Tim Thomas because he brought my B-loveds a Stanley Cup.
2. I don't care that he's a right-wing nutjob because he won me a Stanley Cup. Curt Schilling is a right-wing nutjob, too, and I love him to death for breaking the Curse of the Bambino (he also has double Thomas's IQ but that's another story).
3. I despise Tim Thomas for his ignorance and arrogance in presuming to claim that his explicitly political behavior and statements are not political.
Points 1 & 2 are probably of no concern to you, but you seem to be defending Thomas on point 3. But you're wrong. This:
"This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the federal government,"
Is a political statement that manifests a specific position on matters political. The Founders "vision" itself was quintessentially political. Read the Federalist Papers from start to finish and you'll see that. Or the Madison's Notes of Debates in the Constitutional Convention.
Thomas has every right to diss the President and every right to make loud obnoxious farting noises with his keyboard explaining why he dissed the President. What he does not have right to do is lie about what he's doing.

it was a bit classless, for thomas not to go, but i think in the end, the only one he really hurt, is himself. still it is totally his right to do what he wants.

At the very least, it's graceless. If you're lucky enough to be a major league sports star who wins a championship, meeting the president, whoever he or she is, in a nonpolitical setting seems like a very small expectation on your time, regardless of politics.

spiff:
At the very least, it's graceless.
Compared to Obama who made a boatload of friends (unfortunately, not voters) on the Bruins yesterday by gracefully singling out Thomas for high praise.
As a Democrat, I love the way this played out. As a Bruins fan, I'm pissed at that loudmouth goalie.
FYI, local gossip is the backup goalie is playing tonight. Could just be that Thomas was terrible last start .... could be more than that.

some of the all-star goalies were given off this week by their teams, so it is probably that. he has been playing a little poor lately. he needs to get it back to help my fantasy team.

gorrilla:

--I hope he tanks and they have to put Tukka in. Not for political reasons, it's just obvious that he's the future. I want Tuukka signed long-term. If he gradually takes over for Thomas the next year or two, that'd be perfect. We can win three more Cups the next ten years if they do this transition right.
- 3 votes
tuukka rask is definitely the future. i was happy to see thomas get one, but now i am wondering about him. oh well. the bruins have built a juggernaut. can they repeat? it is very difficult, but i like their chances.
- 2 votes
gorilla:
A lot of folks here are jabbering about Tuukka having huge trade-bait value, which he does, but I think that's stupid. They should overpay him more than he's already getting overpaid as a backup to keep him happy while Thomas eases out.
I thought not at the beginning of the season, but now I think maybe. Maybe even dynasty (knock wood) if they can keep Bergeron, Seguin and Tukka healthy for ten years.
- 3 votes
i hear some of the hype.
trading tuukka would be a huge travesty.
we live three hours away now, since i moved downstate five years ago.
love boston, the red sox, like the celts (hate the lakers), love the bills (like the pats pretty good), used to hate the Bs (sabres rival), but learned to like them when they put together this good of a team in this era.
i am a diehard sabres fan, and i am often quite sad during hockey season because of this, but more happy overall because it is hockey season. some people have four seasons. for me, there are only two: hockey season, and non-hockey season. well, and then there is football season, but that overlaps.

Okay, now that I know you're a Sabres fan I forgive you. Hockey version of Cubs fans. Or Red Sox fans before 2004, for that matter.

I wonder how Timmy Thomas feels about playing in all of those government funded/subsidized hockey arenas?
- 5 votes
SGtNick:
As I pointed out in an earlier thread, not in Boston!
We're the only major league (three or more pro teams) city that has the baseball, football and winter sports venues all privately financed.
Texas spent more on one football stadium than Massachusetts spent on all its facilities combined.
- 4 votes
What about the road/highway improvements that were made to facilitate access to the arena?
- 4 votes
What about the road/highway improvements that were made to facilitate access to the arena?
Well, the big dig was done to make getting in and out of Boston easier in general, not specifically for access to the arena. So, you can make the case that pretty much no public money has been spent on the facilities, and when you look at how much the Garden and Fenway bring in revenue to the city, the amount spent on any infrastructure to support them is minuscule in comparison.
- 3 votes
SgtNick:
There was some of that, sure, but trust me, they served a public purpose.
The Garden is on top of a train station and two subway stations, but those serve the city both for games and as a needed transit connection all other times.
- 4 votes
So Tim Thomas agrees with THIS use of big government funds?
- 4 votes
SgtNick:
I dunno if he's ever thought it through that far. It would probably hurt his brain if he tried.
I really wasn't arguing your original point, I was alluding to the irony that deep-Blue MA does not have public sports venues, whereas deep-Red Texas does.
Our state provides universal health insurance but not football stadia. Texas builds sports venues but has the highest percentage of uninsured.

To call Tim Thomas a "small-minded chump" is pretty generous to him. For someone to have an opportunity to visit the White House and meet the President of the United States is a privilege that any American should cherish, no matter what his political leanings, and no matter who the President happens to be at the time.
Whatever his accomplishments on the ice, the name Tim Thomas will only remind me that some people are toothless, low-class, un-educated slimy knuckleheads who somewhere along the way spilled out the brains they were born with. I hope he never again is given the opportunity to represent the USA on the ice, either. We don't need it getting out that we allow such idiots to be Americans.
Other than that, congrats to the Bruins. Good job.

You know, that's a interesting point that I hadn't considered even though I remembered to post this to the long-dormant 2010 Winter Olympics group.
The least he could've done was a radical right-wing variation of Tommie Smith and John Carlos.

Ya know, this is another of those things I categorize under "Who The F&CK Cares!" Guy doesn't want to go meet the President? F--- him.
Kid: "Grandpa, how come you're not in this team picture after you guys won the Stanley Cup?"
Thomas: "Oh, I was acting like a complete assface that day and thought I'd make a point <sniff>"
- 5 votes
Ha, more like:
Kid: "Grandpa, how come you're not in this team picture after you guys won the Stanley Cup?"
Thomas: "Oh, well there used to be a game called hockey that could make a man a millionaire, but the little scrawny guy in the picture decided that it was better to redistribute the wealth from those who would work to those who would not. I couldn't support that so I skipped the visit."
Kid: "Good for you gramps!"
- 3 votes
decided that it was better to redistribute the wealth from those who would work to those who would not. I couldn't support that so I skipped the visit."
except, then he would be a liar. the only wealth redistribution that we have had in the last decade, is to take money from guys like luke wright, and give it to chad ochocinco. that does not make sense to me. chad ochocinoco does not need a taxcut. oh, i see, he is a job creator. well, then, come on kobe bryant, ochocinco, kris humphries, etc., hurry and get this economy back on its feet.

A little off topic but: when I was watching the Canucks/Bruins game a couple of weeks ago, the Boston fans were chanting "USA USA...", and I had to scratch my head. The Canucks have 6 US born players to the Bruins 2 and the Bruins play in an arena sponsored by a Canadian Bank. Thomas was the only American on the Stanley Cup team while there were 15 Canadians. Just thought it was kind of weird.

ccc:

It's frickin' hilarious.
The coach and all the players behind couldn't vote for Obama. The only one on the stage who could vote for Obama (and I think he did, but maybe not) was the Forbes-list billionaire owner.

Meh. The Wings are on top in the Central and right now on track for a the top seed after beating St. Louis last night. This year is looking good for what might be Lidstrom's last run at another Cup.
Maybe I'll care if they're the two teams meet in the Stanley Cup Finals, but since it looks like it's going to be the Rangers, I could care less ;)
